Fairbanks Community Waste Audit
Next time you’re headed to the transfer site, take a moment to check out the waste audit. During this exercise you’ll sort through your “garbage” to see what you could reuse in a different way, donate to someone else to reuse, recycle, or compost and what you truly need to throw away. Find out where you can take that waste other than the transfer site in Fairbanks. Take notes on what you noticed and brainstorm ways to reduce your landfill waste at home. Share them with us, we would love to hear what you come up with. Click the link below to access a fillable version of our waste audit.
Instructions
Save up your garbage for about a week (or what you would normally take in one trip to the transfer site). If this is too long, less waste will do just fine. However the more you sort through, the more insightful the experience will be.
Click the link button below to access a fillable PDF version of the waste audit. Feel free to print it and fill it out by hand if that’s easier.
2. Follow the inStructions on the worksheet. Pay attention to what you see, items you see more than once, and items you didn’t need to use in the first place. Think critically about ways you could avoid or reduce some of these waste items. Are there more sustainable alternatives, for example a reusable container instead of a plastic bag? Brainstorm some ideas and write them down. We want to hear your thoughts and share them with others.
3. Submit your completed waste audit to us. Feel free to do so in person at the Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District office (590 University Ave. Suite 2 in Fairbanks) or via email to compostfbx@gmail.com . For every submission we receive by Nov. 1, 2023 we will donate one food item to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank and all of those submissions will be entered into a raffle to win some Compost FBX swag! Even if you miss the deadline, feel free to share your finidngs with us. We LOVE to see what people learn and connect with the community.
