Wood Chips
Wood chips are a great bulking agent and carbon source for your compost pile. A bulking agent is a larger feedstock added to your compost pile to promote airflow. This lessens the risk of your pile going anaerobic (without oxygen) and can reduce the amount of times you need to turn your pile. This is especially helpful in when using mainly feedstocks with a smaller particle size (ex. coffee grounds) or that tend to stick together (ex. green grass clippings). Wood chips won’t fully break down and can be screened out and used in your next pile.
Wood chips are not provided directly through Compost FBX but through local logging/milling companies with wood chips as a byproduct. See options below (this is not an exhaustive list, please let us know if we missed something).
C:N Ratio: The carbon to nitrogen ratio of wood chips can vary from 400-800:1 depending on the tree species. It is important to remember that only about 1/3 of each chip will decompose and contribute carbon to your pile (which means you’ll have leftover bulking agent for your next pile). This means you should only use 1/3 of that C:N ratio if calculating it for your pile.
