Wood Shavings
Wood shavings are a great carbon source for your compost pile. Pick some up to mjx with your food waste or green garden waste for a balanced compost pile.
Wood shavings are not provided directly through Compost FBX but through local companies who create shavings as a byproduct. See options below (this is not an exhaustive list, please let us know if we missed something).
Northland Wood (Website)
Wood shavings are currently offered for a small fee with pick up and delivery options are available as well. They are currently priced at $0.75/cubic ft (roughly $2.25 per garbage bag if you bring your own). Sometimes they are able to load a pick up truck bed for you, but not at this time as of 4/24/24.
Superior Hardwoods (Website)
Wood shavings are currently offered free with pick up during business hours at Superior Hardwoods (600 Old Steese Hwy N in Fairbanks). Call to confirm with them directly. (907) 457-8351)
The Great Alaskan Bowl Company (Website)
The Great Alaskan Bowl Company leaves the wood shavings leftover after carving their bowls in the parking lot of their store (4630 Old Airport Rd) for people to take for free. These are usually only available in the summer when they are actively making bowls. Call to confirm availability. (907) 474-9663)
Prices were last updated (4/24/24), please call ahead to confirm prices and availability before arriving.
C:N Ratio: The carbon to nitrogen ratio of wood shavings can vary from 400-800:1 depending on the tree species. Unlike wood chips, the entire shaving will decompose and contribute carbon to your pile.
